about

Poems by Charlotte Mew (English 1869-1928); Music by Linda Smith. Originally released in 1996 by Shrimper, this reissue contains a different mix by George Hagegeorge.

"Tapes used to be the format of choice for the Baltimore based singer/homerecorder Linda Smith, and with I SO LIKED SPRING she returns to the land of the cassette after a series of singles and one CD spread out over a few years. Happily, it's a beauty, and nearly outshines her previous tapes. She's retained her soft, flickering musical style for these songs, built around poems by Charlotte Mew written in the 1910's and 1920's. Not since the Schramms' lovely settings of Dickinson have such antique words been set, like jewels, into a pop form. The words border on the precious, but Smith's treatments bring out deeply mesmerizing undertones in them. The 12 songs barely stretch out over 30 minutes, dealing with subjects such as wind, time, trees, parks, and stars. Smith harmonizes with her own simple, lovely melodies, and fleshes out the arrangements with a gently whistling keyboard, little percussive eggs and tambourines, and some Felt-esque guitar." CMJ
